It's one of the most common questions we get asked: "How often do I actually need to clean my solar panels?" The honest answer is — it depends on where you live, what's around your roof, and how much output you're willing to leave on the table. Here's how to work out the right schedule for your property.
There's no single answer, but there is a starting point
For most homes around Pretoria and Centurion, we recommend a quarterly clean (every 3 months) as the default. This keeps buildup light enough that each clean is quick and effective, and it matches the rhythm of our seasons — dust accumulates fast here, especially heading into the dry winter months when rain isn't around to help rinse panels naturally.
If budget or access is a constraint, a bi-annual schedule (every 6 months) is the next best option — still enough to catch most of the efficiency loss before it becomes significant.
What actually speeds up the buildup?
- Trees overhead or nearby. Pollen, sap, leaves and bird droppings are some of the worst offenders — they don't just sit on the surface, they can bake on in the sun and become harder to remove the longer they're left.
- Proximity to main roads. Dust and vehicle grime settle faster on panels near busy streets.
- Low roof pitch. Panels installed at a shallow angle don't self-clean with rain nearly as well as steeply pitched ones.
- Dry spells. Long stretches without rain mean nothing is naturally rinsing the surface — dust just keeps compounding.
- Construction or agricultural dust nearby. If there's building work or farmland close to your property, expect faster buildup than average.
If two or more of these apply to you, it's worth leaning toward the quarterly schedule — or even discussing a more frequent plan with us directly.
Why does the schedule matter so much?
A solar panel doesn't need to look visibly filthy to be losing performance. A thin, even layer of dust that's barely noticeable from the ground can already be cutting into your output — and because it happens gradually, most homeowners don't notice until they compare inverter readings over time. We cover the specifics of how much efficiency is actually lost in our article on dirty panel efficiency loss.
The panels that need cleaning most urgently are usually the ones that look "fine" from the ground — that's exactly why a regular schedule matters more than reacting to what you can see.
Our recommendation
Start with a quarterly plan for your first year. It gives us — and you — a clear picture of how quickly buildup happens on your specific roof, and from there we can help you dial in the ideal frequency, whether that means staying quarterly, stretching to bi-annual, or tightening up further if your property is particularly exposed.
Not sure what schedule is right for your roof? We'll take a look and recommend one honestly — no upsell, just what makes sense for your property.
